A teen shoots and kills 2 employees, injures 4 at Clovis library

A 16-year-old boy was arrested and charged with shooting two and seriously injuring at least four others on Monday, August 28, at the Clovis-Carver Public Library. Among those killed were two library employees, a 48-year-old children's librarian and a 61-year-old circulation assistant. Those injured include a 10-year-old boy and his sister, 20; a 53-year-old man and another library employee, 30.

The defendant's father returned home that Monday afternoon and found two guns missing from his safe. He also discovered that his son, who had just been placed on a two-day suspension from school, was not home. Fearing the worst, the man called police to report these events. But his discovery happened too late to avert the tragedy.

The boy entered Clovis' main library, walked into the restroom and exited, firing his dad's guns. Witnesses said he took a shot at anyone who came into his line of vision. Just minutes after the shooting spree began, police entered the library and ordered the high school sophomore to surrender. He complied, setting down his gun and raising his hands. Police placed him under arrest. A nearby backpack contained the second gun and additional ammunition.

Those injured were transported to Clovis airport and helicoptered to University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas.

The defendant was booked into the local juvenile detention center on charges of murder in the first degree, aggravated battery, child abuse and felony assault. Prosecutors stated that they intend to try him as an adult rather than a juvenile if the court permits. It's unclear if the library had any security personnel on staff to handle problem patrons.

Workplace injuries or deaths that are caused by random gunfire are fortunately rare, but they can — and do — occur.
