Reckless driving habits should be abandoned to avoid a crash

Each year, an average of at least 35,000 Americans lose their lives on America's roadways according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Whether it be because of drunk, distracted, reckless or fatigued driving or lack of seat belt use, driver error is often what crash scene investigators determine caused a crash.

You don't have to live in area where temperatures dip low enough for roads to ice up to necessitate being more cautious when you're out driving on New Mexico's roadways. Rain also can make for potentially slippery roadways as can an oil spill, mud or other debris.

The average passenger vehicle can weigh as much as 5,000 pounds. This is one of the reasons that a motorist who fails to take the necessary precautions to slow down for poor road conditions can cause another's significant injuries or death.

This is one reason that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) says that there's a direct link between the severity of the injuries a motorist may suffer relative to the speed they're going at the time of the crash.Aside from failing to adjust to road or weather conditions or speeding, another reason motorists become involved in crashes is because of failing to yield to another driver's right of way. Shockingly, the IIHS contends that this is the No. 1 reason that motorists over the age of 70 become involved in traffic accidents. Running red lights or stop signs are two of the most common ways motorists fail to yield to the right of way of others.

Other reckless driving habits that have a tendency to result in serious automobile accidents include motorists swerving out of their lane and into oncoming traffic. While driving too fast for conditions can cause a crash, so too can driving too slow, especially on an interstate.

Trying to ride within the drift of a tractor-trailer may reportedly save gas mileage, but it puts motorists at great risk for crashing into the semi's rear.

These are just some of the many dangerous activities motorists engage in that can ultimately cause them to crash.

If you've suffered serious injuries as a result of having been struck by a motorist driving recklessly, then a Los Lunas attorney can advise you of your right to file an injury lawsuit in your case.
